Since you asked, my wife and I listen to audiobooks while cooking and on drives, and she listens while knitting/sewing/etc. — because with audio, unlike ebooks or physical books, it’s possible to do these other things while listening.
We listen to relatively few authors, mostly mystery and “plain” fiction (e.g., Stephen King, John Sandford, Ann Patchett), though we occasionally listen to random audiobooks we come across (favorite in that category: The Feed, by M.T. Anderson). Much pickier than with print books — I’ll read almost anything, but with audio, every word is being inserted into your consciousness. And besides the story, the reader has to be right, as you’ve discussed.
You mentioned epic fantasy. Not a genre of interest in general (at least since I was 15), but we did listen to Lord of Rings (single-reader version, not the “play” version … ugh), with great pleasure.
Since we’ve been doing this for many years, we’re happy to listen to long or short, new or old, doesn’t matter. Just has to be good!
