In this short show, Steve asks Taylor if she has thoughts about a prologue technique he’s seen an author use across multiple series. As you can imagine, Taylor did have some thoughts.

FWIW, I was one of the people initially thrown by the “day -63” chapter headings in The Mask. Readers just aren’t used to negative numbers :). What might have been more familiar is something like “63 days ago”. I know there are problems with any formulation, though.
For what it’s worth, a lot of the current novels I read are set in alternating timelines, past and present. Various referred to as “Then” vs. “Now”, “Past” vs. “Present”, or “Three months ago”, then “Two months ago”, etc. Exact days are rarely important as they were in The Mask (if I recall correctly).
Good call on the Then vs Now and Past vs Present. I’m seeing that a lot now. Thanks!
