I think you guys are mixing up genre conventions/tropes with archetypes. Archetypes are more generic such as hero, mentor, ally, etc. Joseph Campbell outlined these and other archetypes in his book, “The Hero’s Journey”, based on his study of different cultures’ great literature. He found consistent character traits and distilled them into archetypes.
